Getting Our Mt. Washington Ski Condo Ready for Winter: What's Coming This Season

September at Mount Washington is quiet. The bikes are mostly put away, the lifts have wound down, and the mountain has that in-between feeling it gets before the first real storm. For us, that means it's almost time to get to work.

Painting, One Wall at a Time

The off-season is when the unglamorous stuff happens. Every year we close the condo from Thanksgiving until opening weekend to tackle our projects, and this year's list is already taking shape. We'll be carrying on with our painting plan, which is one or two walls a year. It's a slow and steady process, and it keeps the painting from ever becoming a big, daunting job.

Snowshoes for Guests to Borrow

The change we're most excited about is the snowshoes. We've bought sets for guests to borrow, and this autumn I'll be building proper hangers in the ski closet so they have a home instead of leaning in a corner. Paradise Meadows is right there, and some of the best days on this mountain don't involve a chairlift at all.

Fresh Touches Inside

We're also turning our attention to the things you actually notice when you walk in. New duvet covers are going on the beds, fun ones, along with a fresh stack of good towels. A new ski-themed rug is headed for the front door. And we'll admit that the condo has become the official justification for Luella's Yeti mug habit. What's pictured is only part of her collection at home. There are already a few mugs up at the condo, and this fall she'll be swapping in some new colours and likely adding a couple more.

Warm and Cozy When You Arrive

On the practical side, more smart thermostats are going in. Anyone who has driven up the hill in the dark knows the feeling of walking into a cold room and standing there in your coat while the place slowly catches up. We'd rather you walk in and it's already warm.

A Ski-In, Ski-Out Map for the Fridge

Finally, we're going to put together a proper map of the ski-in ski-out route, with photos, to go on the fridge. If you've stayed with us you'll know that finding your way back to the door on your first day takes a bit of trial and error. We want to take that guesswork away.

See You This Winter

None of this is dramatic. But it's the accumulation of small things that makes a place feel looked after, and that's what we're going for. If you've stayed before, you've seen how it adds up: the Paradise Glades sign by the door and the big framed trail map in the hallway both came out of autumn project weeks like this one.

Winter bookings are open from opening weekend in December. If you'd like to be among the first to try out the snowshoes and wake up to a warm condo, check our winter dates and book your stay here.

We'll see you when the snow flies.
