Mountain Hikes & Ocean Beaches: Best Family Day Trips from Our Mt. Washington Condo

Our Mount Washington Alpine Resort condo puts your family right at the heart of one of Vancouver Island’s most spectacular summer playgrounds. Located in the ski resort community, you’re surrounded by dense forests, alpine meadows, sun-warmed beaches, and roaring waterfalls—all within easy reach. Whether your crew loves spotting wildlife on a mountain trail, exploring tide pools, or paddling calm harbour waters, the Comox Valley and Strathcona Provincial Park offer endless ways to make every day of your June-to-September stay feel like a new adventure.

Here are two of our favourite easy day trips that guests return to year after year. Pack the sunscreen, grab snacks (and maybe a picnic blanket), and get ready for that perfect mix of mountain air and ocean breezes.

Strathcona Provincial Park: World-Class Hiking Steps from the Condo

One of the biggest perks of staying at our condo is how close you are to the trails of Strathcona Provincial Park—British Columbia’s oldest provincial park. The trailhead for many hikes is just a short drive or walk from the condo, making it incredibly convenient for families.

Paradise Meadows Loop

This is our go-to recommendation for families with younger kids or anyone wanting a gentle, rewarding walk. The roughly 4.2 km loop (about 1–1.5 hours) follows a beautiful boardwalk and gravel path through lush sub-alpine meadows. In mid-to-late summer, you’ll be surrounded by vibrant wildflowers like lupines, paintbrush, and heather. It’s mostly flat and even stroller-friendly on the inner Centennial Loop section.

Kids love the sense of adventure without it feeling overwhelming, and the scenery—ponds, meadows, and mountain views—is postcard-perfect. It’s a great “first hike” option that leaves everyone smiling.

Helen Mackenzie & Battleship Lake Loop

For families ready for a bit more adventure, extend your outing on the Helen Mackenzie and Battleship Lake Loop. This moderate trail takes you through forest and past stunning alpine lakes. Expect gentle rolling terrain, beautiful shoreline views, and that wonderful feeling of being immersed in nature. The full loop is longer but very doable for most school-aged kids and active adults.

Wildlife sightings are common in the area—keep your eyes peeled for black bears, deer, and bald eagles. Safety first: we always recommend making noise on the trail and carrying bear spray. Good news—our condo provides a bear horn and bug spray for guests to borrow during your stay. Just let us know when you check in!

Pro Tip for Strathcona Visits: Start early to avoid afternoon heat and crowds. Sturdy walking shoes, water, snacks, and a light rain jacket (mountain weather can change quickly) are essentials. Download offline maps before you go, as cell service can be spotty.

Goose Spit Park: A Coastal Gem Just 35 Minutes Away

When you’re ready for beach time after the mountains, head down to Comox and Goose Spit Park—one of the Comox Valley’s most beloved waterfront spots. This narrow peninsula offers two very different beach experiences in one location, making it ideal for families.

On one side, explore the rocky shoreline at low tide—perfect for hunting crabs, sea stars, oysters, and other tide pool treasures. On the sheltered bay side, the water is calmer and great for kayaking, paddleboarding, or swimming. Older kids and adults often enjoy the scenic staircase trail to the top of the hill for sweeping views across the harbour to the mountains (including Mt. Washington on a clear day).

The park stays open until 11 PM, so it’s fantastic for golden-hour picnics or sunset watching. You might spot windsurfers, sea lions, or eagles overhead. Picnic tables, fire pits (check current rules), and parking make it easy to settle in for the afternoon. It has that lively “something’s always happening” energy that keeps everyone entertained.

Practical Tips for Your Day Trips from Our Condo

•  Drive times: Strathcona trails are very close (often under 10–15 minutes), while Goose Spit is about 35 minutes down the mountain.

•  What to pack from the condo: Reusable water bottles, cooler for snacks, binoculars for wildlife, and towels for the beach. We keep the bear horn and bug spray stocked for your use—huge time-saver!

•  Family considerations: Both destinations work well for mixed ages. Bring layers, sun protection, and a first-aid kit.

•  Best times: Mid-week tends to be quieter. Check BC Parks or Comox Valley websites for any seasonal updates.

Staying in our condo means you get the best of both worlds—spacious self-catering accommodation with easy access to these adventures, plus the convenience of a full kitchen to come home to after a full day out. No fighting over hotel rooms or worrying about restaurant schedules.

We love hearing which spots become your family’s favourites. If you’re planning a summer getaway filled with mountain hikes, beach days, and unforgettable memories, we’d be thrilled to host you at our Mt. Washington condo. Check our availability and book your dates soon—summer fills up fast!
